SIP’s Growing Pains

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is just about the
same age as my daughter, and nearly as complicated.

SIP has been around for about a decade, and its various
uses and importance have been a subject of hot debate for
the whole time, it seems. At the center of the debate is
the standard itself, which has suffered over the years
from what was supposed to be one of its major virtues:
Flexibility. When a standard allows you to implement the
same telephony feature in multiple ways, you’ve got a
recipe for multi-vendor non-interoperability.

To help you with these kinds of basics, for several years
now we’ve presented a SIP tutorial at VoiceCon, with SIP
standards veteran David Bryan as the instructor. We’re
happy to have David on the schedule again for VoiceCon
San Francisco next month, and you can get a preview of
David’s tutorial.

But the really hot story in SIP these days is SIP trunking.
Enterprises are being told they could save some 50% on their
costs if they swap out PRIs for SIP trunks. The good news is
that this is indeed possible; the less-good news is that it’s
very far from straightforward to actually pull off. Our most
recent content in this area includes a blog post by Matt Brunk
of Telecomworx; Matt’s had a lot of experience with SIP Trunking
on the SMB level, and he recently did a post about the critical
issue of carrier Service Level Agreements in SIP Trunking.

There are two additional upcoming bits of content I hope you’ll
keep an eye out for. On October 14, Acme Packet is sponsoring a
VoiceCon Webinar, entitled, “Taking Advantage of SIP Trunking.”
This is going to be a terrific session, as it includes not only
Zeus Kerravala of Yankee Group, one of the top analysts in the
industry; but also an end user, Walt Magnussen of Texas A&M
University. Register. Acme also sponsors our No Jitter Hot Zone
page on SIP Trunking.

I’m also in the editing stage on a No Jitter feature by Dave
Michels, who blogs at Pin Drop Soup as well as NJ. Dave has
some provocative thoughts on the history of SIP, and on its
future in a world where peer-to-peer networking is evolving
in some directions that were unexpected when SIP was originally
conceived as the ultimate P2P multimedia protocol.

I hope you’ll check out all our SIP offerings.

*** This Week’s UC Weekly - The UCstrategies.com team ***
The annual updates of two important Gartner Magic Quadrants
(MQ) occurred in August, the Gartner MQ for Corporate Telephony,
and in September, the Gartner MQ for Unified Communications.
Several very important messages, from my UC perspective, are
delivered by these reports.

The MQ for Corporate Telephony delivers the biggest surprise,
since one of the messages is that Unified Communications has
become a primary consideration in the IP-PBX market. Under
the heading, “The Future for Telephony”, the report says,
“The focus for enterprise telephony is now in UC, yet the
success of vendors will depend largely on their ability to
demonstrate value in their current product portfolios.
Organizations can expect the value of telephony to continue
to diminish as voice is increasingly embedded in UC.”

Certainly, Gartner is not suggesting that any IP-PBX supplier
can ease off in the robustness of their telephony solution,
rather just the opposite. But Gartner does suggest that UC
strategies should drive the decision making, so that the
selection of the IP-PBX is based on “… what role the
Internet Protocol-private branch exchange will play in a
UC Strategy, then make investments to minimize the cost
of ownership.”

Of course, for our regular readers, this is no surprise.
